Let’s face it, Bvlgari is a brand like no other. The high-end Italian house offers the ultimate in fine jewellery, watches, accessories and luxury fragrance. The best Bvlgari Fragrances for men balance the traditional with the outright daring to create attention-grabbing masculine scents.

Founded in 1884 by Greek-born Sotirios Voulgaris, Bvlgari soon became an Italian staple. World domination, however, seemed intentionally slow considering Bvlgari did not open its first international shop until 1970. The first male fragrance from Bvlgari, ‘Bvlgari Pour Homme’, was launched in 1996 to huge acclaim, and firmly placed Bvlgari on the fragrance map.

1. Bvlgari Le Gemme KOBRAA Eau De Parfum

Review

Kobraa is one of those colognes that really doesn’t need a name attached to it. A single whiff of this Oriental Fougere fragrance will immediately scream Bvlgari. Fresh, spicy, and aromatic this is a scent that packs a punch despite being made up of only three notes.

The opening note of geranium gives an almost harsh edge that will definitely grab attention. When the initial blast fades, a heart note of olibanum (frankincense) bleeds through to add green and woody spices. At the very base of it, there is precious agarwood (oud) to give it a robust and warm scent as well as helping it to last longer.

Despite having an enormous sillage, this cologne doesn’t last as long as expected. Giving around 4+ hours of solid wear, with a few extra hours of residual scent, Kobraa is more of a fancy dinner fragrance than an all-day affair. Unsurprisingly, it works best on cold winter and autumn evenings.

Beautifully presented in a tall, green and gold bottle with a narrow neck between the topper and body that almost looks carved in.

As a result, this is a wonderfully tactile aftershave which will really liven up your bathroom or nightstand. In short, Kobraa is a warming and spicy love letter to oriental fragrance.

2. Bvlgari Le Gemme TYGAR Eau de Parfum

Review

An aromatic cologne with a citric edge that perfectly walks the line between masculine and feminine, Tygar is perfect the man who wants to smell fresh and stand out from the crowd.

The opening note of grapefruit is fresh, spicy and bitter, giving the initial sillage a sharp edge while the heart note of ambroxan tempers this. As this cologne blooms, it becomes musky, sweet, and dry, almost papery. The base of this fragrance is made up of woody notes which add to its dry undertones. Despite this, it never becomes sour or unpleasant; the fruity traces of grapefruit that linger throughout the progression.

This is a surprisingly long-lasting cologne with a strong sillage which is ideally suited to spring and summer days. You can expect a solid 6 hours of wear from Tygar, longer if you apply it to your clothes.

Presented in the same tall, elegant bottle as Kobraa, but in black and gold rather than green and gold, this is a deceptively masculine-looking cologne. This bottle invites touch, but the colour scheme seems rather forbidding. You can rely on Tygar to make a statement, both visually and sensually.

To sum it up, this is a bold and invigorating blend for the modern man!

Perfume Notes:

Grapefruit, Woody Notes, Ambroxan

3. Bvlgari MAN Eau de Toilette

Review

Launched in 2010, Bvlgari Man is a perfect example of the Avant-Garde opulence that Bvlgari is so well-known for; it balances masculine and feminine incredibly well.

Initial notes of bergamot, pear, violet leaf and lotus seem overwhelmingly feminine, in traditional perfumery terms. Still, they serve well to balance the overwhelmingly manly woody and musky heart. Incredibly masculine notes of vetiver, sandalwood, cashmere wood, nagarmotha and amber come together to give this fragrance a rich and musky feel. The base notes, however, are sweet; honey, tonka bean, musk, and benzoin mix to form a firm base which enhances the rest of the blend.

Bvlgari Man has a moderate sillage and staying power. Perfect for spring days, this scent will give you around 4 hours of wear from each application, a little more if you spray it on your shirt.

Simply presented in a rectangular, clear bottle with a black and silver top band, it looks pretty standard… unlike most of Bvlgari’s male fragrances. In short, this is a deceptively simple cologne with a beautiful blend of notes and clean-cut presentation.

Top Notes:

Lotus Bergamot Violet Leaf White Pear

Mid Notes:

Vetiver, Woody Notes, Sandalwood, Amber, Cashmere, Wood Cypriol Oil or Nagarmotha

Base Notes:

4. Bvlgari MAN BLACK Eau de Toilette

Review

Sweet, spicy, and floral, Bvlgari Man Black is a surprisingly feminine cologne that nonetheless invokes sensual masculinity.

The top layer of green notes, citrus fruits, and bittersweet rum give this cologne a dark, sweet scent at first application. The upcoming heart notes which bloom after the first thirty minutes or so are much fresher by contrast. Hints of orange blossom and tuberose lift the top notes and provide a palette cleanser before the base notes bleed through. The foundation of sandalwood, amber, musk, and benzoin gives it extra depth.

This is a versatile any-season scent though it loses some of its complexity in the harsh cold of winter. Despite having a reasonably soft sillage, this is a powerhouse of a cologne which should give you 6 to 8 hours of wear from a single application, unless you’re particularly active throughout the day.

Presented in the same bottle as the original, this one replaces the clear glass with a matte black body and shiny top edge. As a result, it looks somewhat professional and clean-cut. All in all, this is a classic but sophisticated blend with a sensual feel.

Top Notes:

Citruses, Green Notes, Rum

Mid Notes:

Tuberose, Orange Blossom

Base Notes:

Sandalwood, Amber, Musk, Benzoin

5. Bvlgari MAN WOOD NEROLI Eau de Parfum

Review

One of the newest additions to the Bvlgari Man family, Bvlgari Man Wood Neroli is a delicate and sophisticated fragrance with a strong, woody base that makes it stand out.

The top notes of bergamot and neroli are well balanced, mixing spice and floral notes perfectly. As the first wave fades, the heart notes of nagarmotha, cedar, and orange blossom bloom and give it a resinous and sweet edge. The base notes of leather, musk, amber, ambergris, and woody notes give it a dry, well-rounded finish that is reminiscent of classic male fragrances of yesteryear.

A perfect cologne for summer and spring days, this well-rounded fragrance is clean, dry, and sensual. With a heavy sillage, this durable blend will last a solid 5 hours after each application.

The brown and green tones of this bottle perfectly match the earthy, natural feel of this cologne. The shape and style of the bottle is in keeping with the rest of the line, but the top band is a dull, brushed metal as opposed to the usual, high-sheen option.

In short, this is a potent, nature-inspired cologne for men who like clean, fresh scents with a traditionally masculine twist.

Top Notes:

Bergamot, Neroli

Mid Notes:

Orange Blossom, White Cedarwood, Cypress

Base Notes:

Leather, White Musk, Amber, Ambergris, Woody Notes

6. Bvlgari MAN WOOD ESSENCE Eau de Parfum

Review

Unsurprisingly, Bvlgari Man Wood Essence is a woody cologne, but fantastic aromatic and citric undertones that keep it crisp and fresh.

The opening is surprisingly spicy and citrusy; lemon zest and citrus fruits blend perfectly with coriander leaf to produce a fresh, invigorating, almost medicinal vibe. Mid notes are woody with cedar, vetiver, and cypress coming together in a slightly resinous blend that is supercharged by the citrus fruits that preceded it. Benzoin forms the base but isn’t really noticeable (to me) in the overall scent.

A versatile cologne, Bvlgari Man Wood Essence is perhaps best suited for spring and autumn days. With a soft sillage and surprising staying power, this cologne is a perfect workday scent that will stick with you from your morning meeting to the commute home.

Tinted glass and the dark green of this cologne give it a somewhat old fashioned aesthetic, as does the brushed metal topper.

Overall, this is a sophisticated and masculine cologne in both scent and appearance.

Top Notes:

Essence of Coriander, Italian Citrus Zests

Mid Notes:

Cedar Wood, Vetiver, Cypress Wood

Base Notes:

Benzoin, Ambergris

7. Bvlgari MAN BLACK ORIENT Parfum

Review

A flanker to the original, Bvlgari Man Black Orient is a spicy, oriental cologne with a rich, bittersweet finish.

The top notes of rum and cardamom dominate this fragrance from start to finish. The dark, bittersweetness of rum stays even as the heart notes of Taif rose and tuberose bloom. These floral notes are intense but fleeting and quickly give way to the base of leather and oud. The result is stunningly versatile and sensually engaging.

With a considerable sillage and enormous staying power, this is the perfect cologne for hardworking men who like to stand out and turn heads. You can expect 4 to 6 hours of wear from one application; more than enough to get you through the working day!

The matte black and pale bronze colour scheme of this bottle makes Bvlgari Man Black Orient a treat for both the eyes and the nose.

In fact, that would be the best way to sum this fragrance up; a sensual, classy masculine treat.

Top Notes:

Rum, Cardamom

Mid Notes:

Taif Rose, Tuberose

Base Notes:

Leather, Agarwood

8. Bvlgari AQVA Pour Homme Eau de Toilette

Review

Aromatic, stimulating, and energetic, Aqva Pour Homme is a perfect scent for youthful, active men who like to evoke the great outdoors wherever they go.

The top notes of mandarin orange, petitgrain, and orange make the first wave of this cologne juicy and slightly sour. Heart notes of cotton flower, lavender, and seaweed temper this with a mix of salt and sweetness that is evocative and stimulating. The base notes are somewhat traditional, but nonetheless effective. The combination of patchouli, cedar, amber and woods are lifted by clary sage.

The soft sillage is matched by a weaker than expected; you should get 3 to 4 hours of wear from a single application. Wear this cologne on summer days to get the best possible experience of the scent.

Presented in a beautiful, round bottle with a contrasting silver topper, this is a stunningly beautiful cologne which would make an extraordinary gift.

Overall, Aqva Pour Homme is a clean and fresh male scent with is a true crowd-pleaser.

Seaweed, Lavender, Cotton Flower

9. Bvlgari MAN IN BLACK Eau de Parfum

BVLGARI MAN IN BLACK Eau de Parfum
Credit: Bvlgari

Review

Bvlgari Man in Black was launched to celebrate the brands 130th anniversary and inspired by the legend of the Vulcan, a God of the earth, which it interprets for the modern man.

Warm, spicy, and earthy, this cologne opens with notes of tobacco, spices, and rum. The slightly bitter, caramelised sweetness of rum lifts the otherwise heady first wave as it mellows. The heart notes of leather, iris, and tuberose lift the otherwise traditionally masculine smell and give it some freshness. The base notes of tonka bean, benzoin, and guaiac wood give it a sappy twang that is pleasantly medicinal.

The sillage of this cologne is truly colossal, so be wary. Once it settles, however, the progression of notes is genuinely stunning. As a very long-lasting fragrance, Bvlgari Man in Black will give you 5 to 7 hours of wear from a single application. This makes it perfect for cold winter evenings.

Unlike the rest of the Bvlgari Man line, the body and topper of this bottle are uniform. The matte black has a slightly pearlescent sheen that invites the touch and prevents it from being too plain.

Simply, understated elegance sums this cologne up perfectly!

Top Notes:

Tobacco, Spices, Rum

Mid Notes:

Leather, Tuberose, Iris

Base Notes:

Guaiac Wood, Benzoin, Tonka Bean

10. Bvlgari AQVA Pour Homme ATLANTIQVE

AQVA Pour Homme ATLANTIQVE
Credit: Bvlgari

Review

Aqva Pour Homme Atlantiqve was launched in 2005 as homage to the original. Aquatic and aromatic like the original, this version also has a touch of amber to give it depth and warmth.

The top notes of sage, bergamot, lemon, and water make for a sharp and sparkling beginning that deepens nicely. Heart notes of ambergris, sea notes, and apple come into play to add a manliness. The foundational notes of patchouli, sandalwood, vetiver, benzoin, and amberwood give it depth, warmth, and a smoky edge that is really quite fetching.

Ideal for spring and summer evenings, this is a durable cologne with enormous sillage. You can expect a solid 4 to 5 hours of wear from this fragrance, more if you apply it to your shirt or hair, and it blooms rather than fades so you’ll always feel fresh.

A slightly brighter version of the original, this bottle looks almost identical to its older sibling. The lighter, jewel-tone blue is more eye-catching, however.

To sum it up, this is a stunning and complex cologne with a fresh, bright feel.

Top Notes:

Sicilian Lemon, Calabrian Bergamot, Water Notes, Sage

Mid Notes:

Ambergris, Sea Notes, Apple

Base Notes:

Patchouli, Sandalwood, Vetiver, Benzoin, Amberwood

Conclusion

While men’s cologne had previously relied on a restricted set of ‘traditionally masculine’ notes, the 90s saw brands like Bvlgari branch out into more androgynous blends. Each of these 10 best Bvlgari fragrances for men balances the traditional with the daring in subtle and stunning ways. This should come as no surprise, of course; Bvlgari never offers anything mainstream. Finally, if you fancy an interesting alternative, Parfums de Marly men’s fragrances offer the splendour and sheer decadence of 18th century France.
