We usually choose a perfume for ourselves, but it’s great when others compliment on your selection as it reassures you that your well chosen fragrance hits the spot. Some perfumes are more pleasing in general than others and it is sometimes a perfume we are less familiar with that we notice so much that we feel the desire to express a compliment.

What are the most complimented women’s perfumes? Fragrances that contain floral or sweet notes tend to be the most complimented women’s perfumes. Scents such as tuberose, vanilla, or sandalwood feature quite often. Sweet and oriental scents are also high in compliments, especially if they have a woody or musky base.

Knowing you smell appealing makes you feel confident and puts a spring in your step that makes everything seem better. When others reinforce that by complimenting you it energizes you even more. But the best feeling comes when even someone you don’t know as well, such as an acquaintance or work colleague, spontaneously voices their appreciation.

This light floral scent is underlined with fruity red berries for a fun and sophisticated fragrance that is not too overpowering but remains unquestionably bright and modern. As indicated by the title, this floral scent is light and feminine with a heady burst of oriental scents that leave a powerful impression.

The uplifting scent of freesia and jasmine is accentuated by an intoxicating waft of patchouli and vanilla that bowls over the senses and fires the imagination, as though you have entered the realm of fantasy.

4. Shalimar by GUERLAIN

Shalimar by Guerlain

Review

Shalimar is warm and intoxicating and once smelled will never be forgotten, It is an intense and inspiring fragrance, which has held its popularity for many years so that it now seems traditionally synonymous with romance and love.

The lingering scents of iris and rose are introduced by a delicate and romantic bergamot fragrance which is instantly appealing and light, This sweet combination gives way to a striking base of vanilla and opoponax for an original signature scent.

Shalimar is irresistibly sensual and best worn in the evening for an indulgent and alluring scent that is at once disarming and sweet. Its hot warm notes make it powerful and sexy, ideal for a night out.

The oldest perfume on my list, Shalimar was designed by Guerlain almost one hundred years ago and is one of the first oriental perfumes to become widely popular. It was inspired by the stunning love story of the Indian Emperor Shah Jahan who dedicated the Taj Mahal to his loved one, and this perfume is almost as wondrous as The Taj Mahal itself.

Even the bottle won a prize at the Paris Decorative Arts exhibition on its launch in 1925, as its goblet shaped bottle is meant to represent the pools of the Shalimar Gardens and its splayed lid signifies the streams of water running into the pools. The rich gold colour of the liquid represents the indulgent decadence and wealth of the Emperor.

Bergamot

Mid Notes:

Rose, jasmine, iris

Base Notes:

Tonka bean, opoponax, vanilla

6. Olympea by PACO RABANNE

Olympea by PACO RABANNE

Review

Olympea is a simple blend of sensual vanilla with fresh floral fragrances that adds a feminine twist to the powerful fragrance associated with Paco Rabanne.

It starts off with a bright, crisp elegance that soon gives way to an intoxicatingly sweet and irresistible cashmere combined with a silky saltiness that leaves you wanting more.

I would wear Olympea any time of day as its fiery warmth makes it ideal for an evening out but its gentle, floral bouquet is perfectly suited to day wear.

Olympea is one of those rare perfumes you can wear to an event that slips seamlessly from day to night.

Olympea was inspired by the Olympic games and designed by three top perfumers: Loc Dong, Anne Flipo, and Dominique Ropion. It is the feminine version of the men’s Olympic inspired Invictus and carries the same flavour of athletic power and success.

The bottle is designed to look like the laurel crown associated with the Olympic games as designed by Marc Ange and its rosy hue in the round glass is reminiscent of an Olympic medal.

9. Angel Muse by MUGLER

Angel Muse by MUGLER

Review

This perfume appeals to the sense of taste as well as smell and its enticing hazelnut cream is so good that this perfume confuses the senses in a blissful chaos of fruit, nut, and rich vetiver.

Fruity top notes of fresh grapefruit give way to rich cocoa and the enveloping scent of patchouli feels like a gentle caress. It is easy to see why this perfume is referred to as a “gourmand” perfume.
The nutty warmth of Angel Muse makes it ideal for an evening event as its luxuriant opulence is at once indulgent and intoxicating.

Created by Quentin Bisch, this magnetic scent comes in an artistic pebble shaped bottle with a dazzling star at the centre resting on an amber oval encased in a lavish silver ring.

The whole bottle has an intergalactic quality. Mugler say the amber colour represents the surface of Mars and the bottle is shaped like a “cosmic pebble” to add to the sense that this perfume is truly out of this world.

Pink peppers, grapefruit

4 Secrets To Keep The Compliments Coming

1. Wear A Perfume That Lasts Longer

There are two things to think about when you are looking for a perfume that lasts: the type of perfume you choose and the concentration of base notes in the overall fragrance.

Eau de parfum is the longest lasting type of perfume you can buy; it has not been watered down like eau de toilette and will keep its scent far longer.

Related: 16 Tips To Make Your Perfume Last Longer

All perfumes include a combination of top, middle and base notes: the top notes evaporate most quickly, while the base notes last longest. This is one of the reasons why your perfume begins to smell differently as it develops. A perfume that has more base notes will seem to keep its original scent far longer than one that is largely made up of top notes.

2. Know Where Is Best To Apply Perfume

In general, you can apply perfume anywhere you like but the best place to apply if you are looking for impact is your pulse points at your wrists, neck, behind the ear, or even behind the knees or in the crease of the arm. At these points, the blood vessels lie closer to the surface of the skin which means they generate heat that helps the perfume to develop.

Related: How To Layer Perfumes Like A Pro

Your perfume also reacts with your body chemicals to alter the scent slightly which is a great way of making a fragrance your own. If you want the scent to stay exactly how it is in the bottle, you might like to add a quick spritz to your hair or clothes where it will continue to waft gently as you move throughout the day.

3. Spray Your Six Pulse Points

Depending on whether you use the stronger eau de parfum or less concentrated eau de toilette, you probably won’t need more than four or five sprays altogether. This could be one spray in each of four different places or you could choose a favourite spot and spray each area a couple of times.

Never rub your wrists together after spraying or you will encourage the perfume to evaporate more quickly; rather, spray each wrist and allow the perfume to dry before moving too vigorously. The idea is to create a subtle hint of fragrance, not an overwhelming barrage.

4. Reapply Your Perfume

It can be so tempting to keep spritzing throughout the day as you look for another burst of your signature scent, but the thing to remember is that we quickly get accustomed to the fragrance and stop being able to smell it.

If the perfume remains strong enough that we can easily smell it ourselves, it may well be overwhelming to anyone else. As a rule, you should try to leave at least three or four hours between applications, and possibly longer if your perfume is oil based.

Closing Thoughts

So there you have it, the 10 most complimented women’s perfumes that have gained compliments from many different sources. It is perhaps surprising that some of these perfumes have been around for a very long time, proving that a perfume doesn’t have to be brand new to deserve a compliment. Any one of these fragrances would make a perfume signature scent and a number of them are versatile enough to be worn both day and night, all year round.

To find your perfect fragrance, you need to wear it for at least an hour to test how it reacts to your body chemicals that enable certain notes to develop more strongly than others.

That perfect fragrance that smells great on a friend may be completely different on you. Once you have found your signature scent, it can be tempting to wear it all the time, and many people do.

I prefer to change my perfume, at least every now and again, so that I enjoy a new fragrance and can mix and match my perfume to create a different effect for different occasions.
