Review

What happens when you put 4 perfumer titans Veronique Nyberg, Anne Flipo, Olivier Polge and Dominique Ropion in a room? The answer; Invictus Eau de Toilette. Since its launch in 2013, Paco Rabanne’s Invictus has delighted the twenty-something crowd with this mass-appeal scent.

Invictus Eau de Toilette greets you with a blast of citrus. Zingy grapefruit is sweetened by lush orange and soothed by a refreshingly cool sea breeze. A heart of sweet jasmine is masculinised by exotic and slightly bitter bay leaf.

Upon dry-down, sweet yet slightly musky ambergris, warm resin and wood add a welcome layer of male confidence. You have to admire this fragrance, it does not put a foot wrong. There is even a hint of musky patchouli, but not overly strong.

Of course, this is more of a warm-season scent, yet the bitter bay leaf and ambergris adds range. In my opinion, this is good for spring/summer/autumn day time. Think holidays, lunches, city breaks, and even the office.

I tested this fragrance in Aug 2020 and Feb 2021 and will say it is still one of the best performing summer fragrances available. 5+ hours on hot summer days 7+ hours in cooler weather with good silage and projection.

Presentation is eye-catching with its now classic trophy-shaped bottle, silver hardware, and light blue hue of the fragrance nestling inside. There is also the collector’s edition bottle, Invictus Onyx.

Overall, Invictus Eau de Toilette is pretty much THE classic ultra-fresh citrus/marine fragrance. It’s a crowd-pleasing freshie that gets compliments galore and is suitable for pretty much any occasion.

2. Paco Rabanne Invictus Aqua Eau de Toilette

Review

Invictus Aqua Eau de Toilette is a fresh and energising aquatic male fragrance. It has a warm and woody edge that feels more grown-up than other Invictus flankers.

Released in 2018, perfumers Juliette Karagueuzoglou and Nicholas Beaulieuu have pulled off a future classic for the modern man who has a touch of the old school about him.

Invictus Aqua’s opening is an airy combination of bright, almost cutting grapefruit blended with lush, green violet leaf and a bubblegum sweetness that softens the edges.

Refreshingly salty marine notes dominate this fragrance’s heart, supported by powdery violet that adds lift.

The dry-down is a rich combination of salty/musky ambergris infused with warming amberwood that cranks up the confident-mature-male dial but keeps the mass-appeal.

Invictus Aqua is a spring/summer feel-good masculine fragrance that feels far classier than a generic holiday scent. It sits firmly in the daytime camp and is versatile enough to wear for most daytime occasions, including to the office.

Performance is good for a marine fragrance, similar to Kenzo in many respects. You can expect 5+ hours of longevity with reasonable sillage and projection for most of that time. Lasts well on clothing.

This fragrance nestles in a light blue version of the classic trophy-shaped bottle. The silver upper and matching dual handles complete the look.

Overall, Invictus Aqua is a fresh marine fragrance with a powdery heart that settles into a warning base of amberwood and ambergris. It took me by surprise as it’s more mature and classy than I expected. This is an upmarket spring/summer daytime scent with plenty of wow-factor.

3. Paco Rabanne Invictus Intense Eau de Toilette

Review

Invictus Intense Eau de Toilette is a spicy/sweet amber scent infused with a generous splash of booze and a hit of salt. Released in 2016, this ‘intense’ version is the black sheep of the collection and is far darker and moodier than I expected.

The opening of Invictus Intense begins with bright orange blossom dusted with cracked black pepper. Malt accord in this fragrance’s heart provides a boozy whisky note, cardamom and bay leaf add a sensual undertone.

Upon dry-down, spicy-sweet amber becomes dominant and supported by musky/salty ambergris. Settles into a spicy-sweet amber and ambergris booze-fest with some cheeky florals.

This is pretty much an any-season except the hottest days of summer as its just a little too sweet for hot daywear. Can be worn for casual days or formal evenings, and everything in-between.

Invictus Intense performs really well. You can expect 7+ hours of wear (less on scorchingly hot days) with strong/projection and sillage.

The overall presentation is eye-catching with its trophy-shaped bottle, plus the spray mechanism works really well. Makes a change from the unimaginative bottles from some perfumers.

Overall, Invictus Intense is still salty fresh and zesty, but with a sweet and spicy amber jolt. This is a well-balanced scent that lasts incredibly well for an EDT. Gets lots of compliments.

4. Paco Rabanne Invictus Legend Eau de Parfum

Review

Invictus Legend Eau de Parfum is an aromatic marine male fragrance that soon reveals a deeper, more mysterious side. Released in 2019, this Invictus flanker shares much of the fresh DNA as the original, yet introduces red amber and mead accord.

Invictus Legend brings a tidal wave of salty freshness and sharp grapefruit that instantly puts you in a feel-good place. There is still a hint of sweet bubblegum to softens the edges. A masculine heart of bitter bay leaf and spices are brightened by earthy/green geranium.

Upon dry-down, warming red amber soon becomes the star of the show and is supported by soft Guaiac wood. All of which work so well with the salty/grapefruit opening and the bitter/spicy heart.

Invictus Legend is an incredibly versatile any-season scent. Its freshness is ideal for spring/summer, and its warm amber can still hold its own for the colder seasons. Equally wearable day or night.

Performance is excellent. I was still getting whiffs of Legend after 8+ hours with good sillage and projection. It was still on my clothing 2 days later. Now, that’s impressive.

This Legend flanker fragrance nestles in a deep blue version of the classic Invictus trophy-shaped bottle. The silver upper and matching handles are stylish, and the spray mechanism works really well.

Overall, Invictus Legend is more than just a fresh marine fragrance with a spicy kick. Once this beauty fully settles, it becomes a battle between fresh salty citrus and warm amber and spices, all with a little cheeky sweetness thrown in.

5. Paco Rabanne Invictus Victory Eau de Parfum

Review

Invictus Victory Eau de Parfum was launched in 2021 and moves away from the trademark Invictus freshness to introduce a moreish woody/vanilla male scent to the collection.

This fragrance still shares the same initial blast of citrus as the original but is spiced with a nip of pepper. A heart of incense soon dominates, providing a smoky/woody vibe, supported gently by lavender.

Upon dry-down, vanilla becomes the main note, working well with the woody heart and citrus. Tonka bean adds an almondy note, amber injects warmth.

This is the first true cold-season Invictus scent, ideal for autumn/winter evening events. Smells quite dressy so save for date night, bars and clubs.

I tested Invictus Victory in September 2021 and got 7+ hours with decent silage and projection.

The presentation is eye-catching with the classic trophy-shaped bottle in jet black with matching black handles and upper body. The gold ‘V’ symbol is an eye-catching touch.

Overall, in my opinion, Invictus Victory Eau de Parfum is not a flanker at all but rather a stand-alone scent. Still well worth checking out if you fancy something masculine and crowd-pleasing. Similar to Armani Code Absolu Eau de Parfum.

6. Paco Rabanne Invictus After Shave Lotion

Review

Guess what guys? Aftershave is making a comeback! Its time to have that shave, slap on the aftershave and try not to scream when the pain kicks in.

Invictus After Shave Lotion provides the classic Invictus masculine fresh fragrance in lotion form. The moisturising ingredients are actually beneficial for your skin, and you only need a few squirts to enjoy this beauty.

The grapefruit and salty marine notes stand out the most initially. As this lotion dries on your skin, you can then get the woods, ambergris, patchouli. Not much jasmine in this version, it’s more fresh and woody/spicy.

Longevity-wise, it only lasts a couple of hours but makes a bit of a change for a sprayed fragrance and feels kinda fun.

I would use this daily as its just a nice way to energise yourself and get the day started on the right foot.

Overall, Invictus After Shave Lotion is an old school way to enjoy the Invictus fragrance and a worthy addition to your male grooming routine.

My skin did feel more hydrated after a few days so there must be something to it. Give it a go, see how you get on!

Which Paco Rabanne Invictus Fragrance Smells The Best?

The best smelling Invictus fragrance for men has to be Invictus Legend Eau de Parfum. A tidal wave of salty freshness and sharp grapefruit leads to a heart of bitter bay leaf, spice, and geranium. Dry-down unleashes warm amber supported by wood and mead accord. Longevity is 8+ hours.

Conclusion

Originally an architect by trade, Paco Rabanne began designing jewellery for other fashion houses before turning his attention to creating an eclectic and contemporary clothing collection. It was way back in 1969 that designer entered the world of fragrance, and has led the charge ever since.

The best Paco Rabanne Invictus fragrances all open with a strikingly marine freshness with added grapefruit citrus kicker. They soon bring in manly spices and woods, yet also have some sweet floral notes and a bubblegum hint to reveal a softer side.

The Invictus collection also offers excellent value for money when you consider the fragrance quality, outstanding performance, and cool packaging.

These fragrances are well-known to reel in the compliments. Sure, they can smell a little synthetic, but it’s done really well, and they smell expensive.

Paco Rabanne has done an excellent overall job with the Invictus collection. Maybe not their advertising slogan, but I cannot contain myself any longer; THIS IS SPARTA!
