Since launching their first male cologne, Chanel Pour Monsieurin 1955, Chanel has created some of the world’s most iconic male fragrances. The best Chanel fragrances for men project a sense of masculine style, class and sophistication.

Chanel colognes seemed to take a back seat at first, being formulaic and relying on the same ‘masculine’ notes in varying combinations. The 1990s saw the brand begin to experiment, creating some of the most desirable male fragrances in history.

Review

One of Chanel’s most iconic colognes, Bleu de Chanel Parfum was launched in 2018 and represents a modern twist on classic masculine perfume notes. (check out my Bleu de Chanel EDT vs EDP vs Parfum comparison.)

Opening with lemon zest, bergamot and a touch of mint that soon mellow into masculine florals of lavender and geranium. A hint of pineapple adds a subtle sweetness.

In the base, cedar and amberwood work brilliantly with smooth tonka bean. Iso E Super adds additional warmth. A woody/floral masterpiece.

This is an incredibly versatile fragrance that can be worn day or night in any season, though the winter chill can be a little hard on it. 6+ hours of durable staying power, this is a solid day-to-day cologne for men who like to smell both classy and fresh.

Overall, Bleu de Chanel Parfum is an aromatic and sophisticated combination of citrus, woods and lavender. A real crowd-pleaser. Also, consider Versace Dylan Blue Pour Homme Eau de Toilette.

Top Notes:

Lemon Zest, Bergamot, Mint, Artemisia

Mid Notes:

Lavender, Geranium, Green Notes, Pineapple

Base Notes:

Cedar, Sandalwood, Iso E Super, Tonka Bean, Amberwood

Review

From the Chanel Allure collection, Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme is an aromatic and fresh spicy/woody concoction with a delightful vanilla kick.

Opening with sage, orange, cypress and mint that are deliciously invigorating, herby and aromatic. A heart of pepper adds a sprinkle of masculine spice.

The base is musky and woody with a tidal wave of creamy vanilla from the tonka bean smooths any sharp edges. Fantastic.

An extremely durable cologne lasting 5+ hours with excellent sillage, Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme is the perfect choice for spring and summer. Better still, it makes a great day into evening scent.

Overall, Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme is fresh, masculine, and downright sexy. Similar to Versace Pour Homme Eau de Toilette.

Top Notes:

Sage, Mandarin Orange, Mint, Cypress

Mid Notes:

Pepper

Base Notes:

Musk, Sandalwood, Cedar, Tonka Bean

3. Allure Homme Sport Cologne

Review

Originally launched in 2007 and updated in 2016, Allure Homme Sport Cologne is arguably one of the best designer citrus fragrances on the market.

Begins with an incredibly refreshing citrus opening of orange, bergamot, lemon and grapefruit. Although neroli and aldehydes are listed, I could not detect them. Spice and warming resin soon creep in to provide an almost medicinal scent.

A supportive base of creamy tonka bean, cedar, grassy vetiver and musk add welcome depth. A hint of pepper creeps in and out.

With a moderate sillage of 4+ hours and staying power, this is a clean and refreshing fragrance that is perfect for summer days when it will cut through the warm air to lift your mood.

Overall, Allure Homme Sport Cologne is a head-turning citrus summer creation that will get you noticed for all the right reasons. Also, check out Jimmy Choo Man Ice Eau de Toilette.

Top Notes:

Aldehydes, Orange, Mandarin Orange, Grapefruit, Neroli, Bergamot, Lemon

Mid Notes:

Spices, Fir Resin, Elemi Resin

Base Notes:

Tonka Bean, Atlas, Cedar, Vetiver, White Musk, Pepper

4. Allure Homme Eau de Toilette

Review

Launched in 1999, Allure Pour Homme remains a firm favourite due to its incredible complement generating abilities.

Opens with a mix of spicy, floral, and fruity notes which include ginger, peach, lavender and lemon. A woody/floral heart reveals cedar, rose, pepper, freesia, and vetiver.

Upon dry-down, leather, amber, coconut, vanilla, and oakmoss emerge from the base, and this fragrance becomes sweet and oh-so warming. Reminds me of Eight & Bob Egypt.

Perfect for winter days and early spring mornings, this fragrance has a soft sillage but surprising staying power. You can expect 4 to 5 hours of wear from this cologne.

Overall, Allure Pour Homme is anything but simple, which makes this fragrance a gorgeous contradiction. Fresh, spicy and woody, the vanilla citrus and tonka bean really stand out.

Top Notes:

Ginger, Lavender, Mandarin Orange, Peach, Bergamot, Lemon

Mid Notes:

Gardenia, Patchouli, Freesia, Jasmine, Vetiver, Anise, Cedar, Pepper, Rose, Brazilian Rosewood

Base Notes:

Leather, Sandalwood, Tonka Bean, Amber, Musk, Benzoin, Coconut, Oakmoss, Vanilla

Review

Allure Homme Edition Blanche is an oriental woody take on Allure Pour Homme. Stunningly simple yet effective, this is now a firm favourite with Chanel fans.

Bergamot and lemon make up the top layer of this fresh and invigorating cologne, with the initial opening being almost sour. A heart of sweet, woody notes soon adds a masculine touch.

Upon dry-down, grassy vetiver and spiced vanilla is what brings the whole fragrance together in a cohesive and utterly irresistible form.

Spring and summer days are best for this complex and delicate cologne. While initial sillage is quite strong, staying power is moderate; you’ll generally only get 4 hours of wear out of one application.

Overall, a delightful citrus/vanilla combo that’s perfect for spring/summer.

Top Notes:

Bergamot, Lemon

Mid Notes:

Woody Notes, Sandalwood

Base Notes:

Vetiver, Madagascar Vanilla

6. Égoïste Eau de Toilette

Review

A spicy and traditional cologne that makes use of masculine ingredients and tempers them with delicate floral notes, Égoïste has been in vogue since it was launched in 1990.

Unlike many scents, this cologne opens with woody notes of mahogany and Brazilian rosewood, tempering them with mandarin orange and coriander. This dry and rich first wave is balanced by the spicy and floral heart notes of cinnamon, rose, and carnation.

It is the base notes which really steal the show, however; dark tobacco is present at every stage, backed up by vanilla, amber, leather, and sandalwood.

With considerable sillage and enormous staying power, Egoiste is perfect for winter evenings when the warming and spicy notes will bloom in the cold air. Expect 5 to 6 hours of wear from each application.

Overall, Égoïste Eau de Toilette is a dark woody/tobacco masculine cologne with a cheeky twist of rose. Vey similar to Calvin Klein Obsession but I would still choose Égoïste.

Top Notes:

Mahogany, Sicilian Mandarin, Brazilian Rosewood, Coriander

Mid Notes:

Carnation, Cinnamon, Damask Rose

Base Notes:

Leather, Sandalwood, Vanilla, Tobacco, Amber

7. Platinum Égoïste Eau de Toilette

Review

Launched in 1993, Platinum Égoïste Eau de Toilette is the younger, slightly less traditional sibling to the original. With more floral notes, it takes a softer, sweeter approach.

This cologne opens with a herbal and floral blend of rosemary, neroli, and lavender that is slightly medicinal in its approach. Still, geranium takes the edge off and blooms into a sweet/green floral.

A discreet base of warm amber, sandalwood, oakmoss, vetiver, and cedar soon creep in. Smells as good today as it did nearly 30 years ago.

Perfect for spring and summer afternoons, this perfume has a heavy sillage and an incredibly durable scent that will last for a solid 4 to 6 hours depending on what you do through the day.

Overall Platinum Égoïste Eau de Toilette is an electric combination of manly florals, fresh spices and wood. Quite similar to the new 2021 release Chanel Paris Édimbourg Eau de Parfum.

Top Notes:

Rosemary, Lavender, Neroli, Petitgrain

Mid Notes:

Galbanum, Clary Sage, Jasmine, Geranium

Base Notes:

Amber, Sandalwood, Oakmoss, Vetiver, Cedar

Review

Launched in 2016, Pour Monsieur Eau de Parfum is the perfect cologne for the modern man. Evocatively straightforward, this is a statement piece of a fragrance that conveys power and confidence.

Lemon is undoubtedly the star of this show; it dominates the top notes, flanked by lavender, and remains in the undercurrent even as the heart notes of nutmeg and vanilla bleed into the fore.

The base of vetiver is mild, yet present and cohesive, bringing the rest of the notes together with a slight musky vibe.

This is an incredibly versatile cologne that can be worn at almost any time or event. Nonetheless, it is far more suited to daytime wear than evenings and fades more quickly in winter. Longevity is 4+ hours.

Overall, Pour Monsieur Eau de Parfum is a grown-up, fresh-oriental cologne with a hint of musk which is perfect for any occasion.

Top Notes:

Lavender, Lemon

Mid Notes:

Vanilla

Base Notes:

Vetiver, Nutmeg

9. Antaeus Pour Homme Eau de Toilette

Review

Named for the Greek demigod, Antaeus is strong yet gentle, just like the fabled man himself. Using notes most commonly seen in the ’80s, this is a cologne that balances strength with expression.

The complex array of top notes, including myrrh, lemon, bergamot, lime, coriander, and clary sage, does not blend well at first. The sharp zest of lemon and lime, backed up by the musky, herbal scent of sage is what comes through first.

Once this first wave fades the spicy, citric warmth of lime stays and mixed with the floral heart notes of rose, jasmine, thyme, and basil.

Throughout the evolution of this cologne, the base note of castoreum is potent. Still, when the top and mid notes fade, the base notes of labdanum, patchouli and oakmoss shine through.

This is a potent fragrance that will last for a solid 5-7 hours. Best worn in cold weather, this is a perfect scent for winter evenings.

Overall, Antaeus Eau de Toilette is the perfect ode to its namesake; strong and striking, yet complex and intensely sensual. Also, consider Aramis Eau de Toilette.

Top Notes:

Coriander, Bergamot, Amalfi, Lemon, Lime, Clary Sage, Myrhh

Mid Notes:

Jasmine, Thyme, Rose, Basil

Base Notes:

Labdanum, Patchouli, Oakmoss, Castoreum

Review

Launched in 2020, Le Lion de Chanel Eau de Parfum is a masterful woody/amber cologne crafted by Olivier Polge that simply oozes masculine confidence and energy.

A zesty citrus opening of lemon and bergamot is soon warmed by a smooth and exotic heart of rich amber and the divine leathery scent of labdanum.

Upon dry-down, earthy/musky patchouli and smooth sandalwood bring more complexity to this refined masculine cologne.

Perfect for autumn and winter, this is a potent male scent with excellent sillage and superior staying power of 6+ hours.

Overall, Le Lion de Chanel Eau de Parfum is a modern Chanel masterpiece. Classy yet deceptively simple, you need this beast in your collection.

Top Notes:

Bergamot, Lemon

Mid Notes:

Labdanum, Amber

Base Notes:

Patchouli, Vanilla, Sandalwood, Musk
