The passage of time is a journey we all embark upon, with each year adding more wisdom, experience, and, sadly, a few more lines on your face and greys in your hair.

But gentlemen, let’s not be disheartened. Age, as they say, is just a number. And with age comes a certain chic, a style that the young bucks can only aspire to.

But, as with all things, this style requires a touch of maintenance, and since passing the big 50, I’ve picked up several grooming tips for mature men that are well worth knowing.

10 Grooming Tips For Mature Men

Let’s go over my essential grooming tips for mature men so you can enhance your natural style and maintain a polished appearance… at any age.

1. Embrace The Grey

Embrace The Grey - grey haired man

First things first, if nature has decided to pepper your hair and beard with a touch of silver, embrace it. The salt-and-pepper look exudes a certain gravitas.

But do ensure it’s well-kept. A trim here, a touch-up there, and you’ve got a head of hair that George Clooney would nod approvingly at.

2. Face Wash & Moisturise

With its ever-present drizzle of rain in London or the intense sunshine of Florida, both can be a tad unkind to our skin. And as we mature, our skin requires a bit more TLC.

Invest in a quality face wash and also a decent moisturiser, preferably one with SPF. It keeps the skin supple, protects against the elements, and reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

3. The Beard – To Keep or Not to Keep?

The Beard - bearded man

Ah, the eternal question. If, unlike me, you’ve been blessed with the ability to grow a full beard, and you choose to keep it, ensure it’s well-groomed.

A regular trim, a touch of beard oil, and you’re golden. If the clean-shaven look is more your style, invest in a good razor and remember to exfoliate. It reduces ingrown hairs and keeps the skin looking fresh.

4. The Eyes Have It

The eyes, they say, are the windows to the soul. But they’re also the first to betray a late night or an early morning.

A good eye cream can work wonders. It reduces puffiness, tackles those pesky dark circles, and gives the eyes a youthful (and, ahem.. less hungover) appearance.

5. Dress the Part

Dress the Part - shirts and shoes

Now, I’ve always believed that style is eternal. But that doesn’t mean we hold onto that baggy floral shirt from the ’80s.

Update your wardrobe. Opt for classic cuts, invest in good shoes, and remember, a well-fitted suit is to women what lingerie is to men.

6. Fragrance – The Invisible Accessory

Considering I’m a fragrance writer, scent is always on my mind. Choosing a timeless fragrance, leaving an impression without overpowering the room, is where you want to be.

Whether it’s a winter fragrance with woody notes of sandalwood or the fresh barbershop smell zest of citrus, find one that resonates with your personality.

7. Fitness – The Fountain of Youth

Man exercising

While not strictly a grooming tip, staying active is perhaps one of the best anti-ageing tips for men. Although I only run if being chased, I personally exercise with cardio 3 times a week, with no exceptions.

Keep moving, guys, whether it’s a brisk walk in the park, a swim, or simply taking the stairs. It keeps the heart young, the body agile, and the spirit alive.

8. Hands – The Unsung Heroes

Our hands, often overlooked, do the lion’s share of the work. And they show signs of ageing faster than our faces.

A decent hand cream, regular manicures (yes, gents, manicures), and you’ve got hands ready for any handshake or a gentle caress, depending on the situation.

9. Sleep – Nature’s Rejuvenator

Sleeping man

With the hustle and bustle of modern life, sleep often takes a backseat. But it’s essential.

Sleep is when our body repairs itself, our mind dreams, and our skin rejuvenates. So, invest in sound sleep. It’s the best grooming tip I can give you.

10. Confidence – The Best Outfit

Lastly, wear your age with pride. With the years come stories, experiences, and a certain confidence that can’t be bottled. Stand tall (even if you’re 5ft 7 like me), wear that smile, and remember, age is just a state of mind.
