Let’s face it, Dior Sauvage vs Bleu de Chanel will be a close call as these are two of the most popular men’s fragrances on the planet. Both EDPs are fresh, woody, and slightly spicy….. perfect for everyday wear.

Dior Sauvage EDP was created by perfumer genius Francois Demachy; it’s an incredibly well-balanced contemporary male fragrance that is both classy and refined.

Bleu de Chanel is perhaps the undisputed champion of luxury blue fragrances. This fresh and energetic male scent shrouds you in a smoky citrus and wood bubble that oozes style.

Review

Launched in 2018, Dior Sauvage Eau de Parfum is a spicy yet fresh ambroxan-bomb that is sure to turn heads. It opens with zesty bergamot, pepper, and cheerful lavender, ensuring this fragrance oozes class right from the start.

The heart of the fragrance is ambroxan-heavy, with seductive star anise and nutmeg spicing things up. Upon dry-down, delicate hints of smokey vanilla bring out the best of the spices and fragrant lavender.

Top Notes:

Bergamot, Pepper

Mid Notes:

Lavender, Star Anise, Nutmeg

Base Notes:

Vanilla, Ambroxan

Seasons & Longevity

Dior Sauvage Eau de Parfum is an any-season fragrance. Wear it casually for spring and summer, and you can dress it up a bit for autumn/winter by layering it with Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille.

The performance of this EDP is excellent, lasting 8+ hours with good sillage and projection.

Review

Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum is another masterpiece by Jacques Polge, launched in 2014. It has quickly become one of the most iconic men’s fragrances from Chanel. This EDP version is warmer and woodier than the brighter EDT version.

The opening notes are bright and zesty, with grapefruit and lemon tempered by spicy pink pepper and a cloud of smoky incense. The heart is a spiced mix of nutmeg and ginger, lifted by jasmine.

The dry-down reveals incense, amber, and woody notes. The final result is a refined combination of citrus, amber, spice, and a touch of smoke.

Top Notes:

Lemon, Grapefruit, Pink Pepper, Bergamot, Coriander, Mint, Aldehydes

Mid Notes:

Melon, Jasmine, Ginger, Nutmeg

Base Notes:

Labdanum, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Cedar, Amber, Incense, Woody

Seasons & Longevity

Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum is a versatile all-rounder that can be worn any time, day or night, in any season. It is excellent as a daytime out-and-about fragrance, for full-on clubbing, or for a sedate Sunday brunch.

On my skin, the EDP version lasts the longest of the three, with good sillage and projection. I would expect it to last for 7+ hours.

Andrew’s Top Pick

Dior Sauvage vs Bleu de Chanel

Dior Sauvage Eau de Parfum

Overall, Dior Sauvage Eau de Parfum is my top pick. It is a versatile, stylish, and long-lasting fragrance that is perfect for any occasion. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new signature scent.

Which Fragrance Is Better?

The answer to this question is ultimately up to personal preference. Both Dior Sauvage and Bleu de Chanel are excellent fragrances and are different enough to own both (I do!). If you want a bold and confident fragrance, Sauvage is the better choice. If you want a more fresh and versatile fragrance, Bleu de Chanel is the better choice.

  1. Which would you recommend for my husband who is turning 40 to wear to work (banker) but also wear casually on the weekends? His previous signature scent was Chanel Platinum Egoiste but looking for something new for him? Thank you

    • Hi Feri! I was in-store at Chanel last week and re-tried both Bleu de Chanel EDP and Parfum versions. The EDP is a classic and I love it, however I would lean more towards the Bleu de Chanel ‘parfum’ version for your husband as it is more woody, but has plenty of citrus and lavender still.

Also, check out Dior Homme Parfum as it has powdery iris that gives a classy ‘pencil shavings’ vibe once it dries down. Very nice. I would say try that in store and see what you think.

      • Thanks Andrew, I will try them out. But am I right in that you would recommend Sauvage EDP more so over the Bleu de Chanel and Dior Homme Parfum for my husband ? Thanks

  2. Thank you Andrew, I tried several boutiques but none had Dior Homme Parfum, apparently on sold via the Dior.com website so I went with Dior Sauvage EDP and EDT and it did not disappoint. Probably prefer the EDP but the EDT seems fresher for warmer weather 👍🏻
